The Datejust, the ultimate classic Rolex
Launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding, waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock. It later gained the Cyclops lens, which magnifies the date, and became the most versatile Rolex in the line: understated enough for a suit, tough enough for every day. It’s often the first Rolex people buy, and the one they keep.
Which Datejust size should you choose?
| Size | Best for | In our inventory |
|---|---|---|
| Datejust 41 | Medium to large wrists, bold presence | Wimbledon, Mint, Ombre Green, Blue, Black, Silver, Rhodium, two-tone, diamond dials |
| Datejust 36 | The historic size, unisex | Wimbledon, Mint, diamond-set Champagne Rose |
| Datejust 31 | Slim wrists, often chosen by women | Mint, Olive, mother of pearl, two-tone rose gold |
| Datejust 28 and 26 | Ladies’ size, very elegant | Pink, rose gold and black mother of pearl |
The best advice is still to try them on: the gap between 36 and 41 mm looks small on paper, but it changes a lot on the wrist. To compare with other models, see our men’s Rolex watches.
The most sought-after dials
- Wimbledon: slate dial with green Roman numerals, a nod to Rolex’s partnership with the tennis tournament.
- Mint Green: one of the most requested recent dials.
- Mother of pearl: every dial is unique, especially popular on the Datejust 31 and 28.
- Diamond-set dials: diamond hour markers for a dressier look.
- Ombré: a gradient from the centre to the edge, like our Datejust 41 Ombre Green.
Every Datejust authenticated by our experts
The Datejust is one of the most copied Rolex watches, precisely because it’s the most widespread. Before it’s offered, every piece goes through our authenticity check: movement, serial and reference numbers, Cyclops lens, dial and bezel finishing, bracelet and original papers when available. Frequently asked questions about the Rolex Datejust
A Datejust’s price depends mainly on size, material, bezel and dial. In steel with a smooth bezel, it’s one of the most accessible Rolex watches. Two-tone versions, gold fluted bezels and diamond-set dials cost considerably more. On the Canadian secondary market, Datejust listings range from about $4,500 for older pieces to over $45,000 for some gold versions.
No. The Datejust is simply one of the most accessible models in the line, because it comes in steel and in several sizes. It uses the same type of in-house mechanical movement, the same waterproof Oyster case and the same manufacturing standards as other Rolex watches. It’s also the brand’s historic model, produced continuously since 1945.
Yes. The Datejust is one of Rolex’s core collections and its oldest model still in production, made by Rolex in Switzerland like every other Rolex. Because it’s so popular, it’s also widely counterfeited, which is why a pre-owned Datejust should always be authenticated by an expert before you buy it. Every Datejust we offer goes through that check.
The Datejust 36 is the historic size, understated and unisex, ideal for slim to medium wrists. The Datejust 41 offers more presence and suits larger wrists or anyone who likes a more visible watch. Both share the same style. The best way to choose is to try them back to back in store.
The Datejust 31 and 28 are the sizes women choose most often, frequently with a mother-of-pearl, Mint or diamond-set dial. Many women also go for the Datejust 36, which is unisex and very much in style. The right size depends mostly on the wrist and on the look you want, more discreet or more assertive.
Well-maintained Datejust watches generally retain a good share of their value on the secondary market, especially sought-after dials like the Wimbledon or Mint and pieces sold with box and papers. They are less speculative than the Daytona or Submariner, though. Future value is never guaranteed: start by choosing a Datejust you love to wear.
What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
