The Submariner, the icon of dive watches
Launched in 1953, the Rolex Submariner was one of the first dive watches water-resistant to 100 metres offered to the public. More than 70 years later, it has become Rolex’s most recognizable sports watch, worn with a suit as easily as with a t-shirt. The current generation measures 41 mm, is water-resistant to 300 metres and features a Cerachrom ceramic bezel, an Oyster bracelet and the Glidelock clasp, which adjusts the length without tools.
Submariner variants and their nicknames
Collectors often refer to Submariners by their nicknames. Here are the most sought-after.
| Nickname | Reference | What sets it apart | Production |
|---|---|---|---|
| Submariner No Date | 124060 | Black dial, no date, the purest version | Current |
| Submariner Date | 126610LN | Black dial and bezel, with date | Current |
| Starbucks (or Cermit) | 126610LV | Green bezel, black dial | Current |
| Bluesy | 126613LB | Steel and yellow gold, blue dial and bezel | Current |
| Hulk | 116610LV | Green dial and green bezel | Discontinued |
| Kermit | 16610LV | Green aluminium bezel, black dial | Discontinued |
The Hulk and the Kermit are no longer made, which makes them highly sought-after on the secondary market. The Starbucks, which succeeded them, keeps the green bezel in ceramic with a black dial. For everything about references and prices, read our complete Rolex Submariner buyer’s guide.
Every Submariner authenticated by our experts
The Submariner is one of the most counterfeited watches in the world. Before it’s offered, every piece goes through our authenticity check: movement, serial and reference numbers, rehaut engraving, bezel, Cyclops lens, bracelet and original papers when available. Frequently asked questions about the Rolex Submariner
A Submariner’s price depends on the reference, material and condition. In steel, the No Date is the most accessible in the line, followed by the Submariner Date. Steel and gold versions like the Bluesy, and solid gold models, cost considerably more. On the secondary market, steel models often sell above retail because of waitlists at official retailers.
On the Canadian secondary market, the Submariner Starbucks (reference 126610LV) is currently listed at around $21,000 to $27,000, depending on the year, condition and whether the box and papers are included. An unworn piece with full documents sits at the top of that range. Prices move with demand, so it’s worth comparing several recent offers before you buy.
All three have a green bezel, but they belong to different generations. The Kermit (16610LV) has an aluminium bezel and a black dial. The Hulk (116610LV) has a green dial and a green ceramic bezel. The Starbucks (126610LV), made today, returns to a black dial with a green ceramic bezel and a 41 mm case. The Hulk and the Kermit are no longer produced.
At official retailers, the Submariner often comes with a waitlist, especially steel versions like the Starbucks. On the secondary market, you can get one immediately, new or pre-owned. For a specific reference that isn’t in stock, a brokerage service can source it through an international network. Always have the watch authenticated before you pay.
For many buyers, yes. The Submariner is robust, versatile and built to last for decades with regular servicing. Steel versions generally hold their value well on the secondary market, and discontinued references like the Hulk are especially sought-after. Future value is never guaranteed, though: start by choosing a version you love to wear.
What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
