The GMT-Master II, the traveller’s watch
The GMT-Master was born in the 1950s, in collaboration with Pan Am, so pilots could read the time in two time zones at once. Today’s GMT-Master II keeps that principle: an extra hand circles the dial once every 24 hours, and a two-colour rotatable bezel graduated to 24 hours separates day from night. Its Oyster case measures 40 mm. It’s Rolex’s most colourful sports watch, and one of the most coveted.
GMT-Master II variants and their nicknames
Among collectors, every colour combination has a nickname.
| Nickname | Bezel colours | What sets it apart | In our inventory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pepsi | Red and blue | The historic combination of the first GMT | Steel and white gold |
| Batman | Blue and black | Two-colour ceramic, Oyster bracelet | Yes |
| Batgirl | Blue and black | Same bezel as the Batman, Jubilee bracelet | Yes |
| Sprite | Green and black | Crown on the left, a left-handed version | Yes |
| Bruce Wayne | Grey and black | The most understated colourful GMT | Yes |
| Root Beer | Brown and black | Everose gold, with or without steel | Rose gold |
The Batman and the Batgirl are the same watch on a different bracelet: the three-link Oyster for the Batman, the five-link Jubilee for the Batgirl.
Every GMT-Master II authenticated by our experts
Popular GMT-Master II models, especially the Pepsi and the Batman, are among the most counterfeited Rolex watches. Before it’s offered, every watch goes through our authenticity check: movement, serial and reference numbers, Cerachrom ceramic bezel, GMT hand, bracelet and original papers when available. Honos Watches is an independent watch dealer and is not affiliated with any brand, including Rolex. Rolex, GMT-Master II, Oyster, Jubilee, Cerachrom and Everose are trademarks of Rolex SA. Nicknames such as Pepsi, Batman, Batgirl, Sprite, Bruce Wayne and Root Beer are collector terms, not official Rolex names.
Frequently asked questions about the Rolex GMT-Master II
At Canadian retail, the steel GMT-Master II sits around $15,000. On the secondary market, demand often pushes prices above retail: on Chrono24.ca, unworn GMT-Master II watches are listed from about $21,000 to over $65,000 depending on the bezel, material and year. Gold versions and the Pepsi sit at the top of that range.
The Batman and the Batgirl share the same blue and black ceramic bezel, the same dial and the same movement. Only the bracelet changes: the Batman comes on a sportier three-link Oyster bracelet, while the Batgirl comes on a dressier five-link Jubilee bracelet. The “Batgirl” nickname comes from collectors, not from Rolex.
At official retailers, the steel GMT-Master II often comes with a waitlist, especially the Pepsi and the Batman. On the secondary market, you can get one immediately, new or pre-owned. For a specific combination that isn’t in stock, a brokerage service can source it through an international network. Always have the watch authenticated before you pay.
The triangle-tipped GMT hand makes one full turn of the dial every 24 hours. It’s read against the bezel graduated from 1 to 24, which lets you track the time in a second time zone. By rotating the bezel, you can even display a third time zone. The bezel’s two colours distinguish daytime hours from night-time hours.
Steel GMT-Master II watches, especially the Pepsi and the Batman, generally hold their value very well on the secondary market thanks to strong demand and limited supply at retailers. Discontinued references are also sought-after. Future value is never guaranteed, though: start by choosing a watch you love to wear, and buy it authenticated.
What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
