Cartier, the jeweller who shaped the wristwatch
Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, the house first built its name in jewellery before leaving its mark on watchmaking. In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the Santos for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviator who wanted to read the time without letting go of the controls: it’s one of the very first wristwatches designed for men. The Tank followed in 1917, its lines inspired by the tanks of the First World War, and the Panthère in 1983. More than a century later, these shapes are still at the heart of the collection.

How to recognize a Cartier
- Roman numerals: the classic Cartier dial, with a railway minute track around the centre.
- Sword-shaped blued hands: a house signature on the Santos, the Tank and the Panthère.
- Blue cabochon crown: a blue stone set in the crown, recognizable at a glance.
- Distinctive cases: the square Santos with its screws, the rectangular Tank, the Panthère’s bracelet with soft links.
- Secret signature: on many models, the word Cartier hidden in the stroke of one of the Roman numerals.

Frequently asked questions about Cartier watches
Both. Cartier was founded as a jeweller in Paris in 1847, but it has been making watches for more than a century: the Santos, designed in 1904, is one of the first wristwatches created for men. Today the house develops its own in-house movements, like the automatic calibre in the Santos de Cartier, alongside its design-led jewellery watches.
Yes. Many of the house’s most iconic watches, like the Panthère and the Tank Must, use a quartz movement, which makes the case slim and the watch very precise and easy to live with. What sets a Cartier apart is its design, its finishing and the quality of its case and bracelet. If you prefer a mechanical movement, look at the Santos de Cartier in medium or large size.
The Santos is the most popular choice for men: a square steel case, a sporty look and an automatic movement. The large Tank Must suits those who want a dressier, very understated watch. For more presence, the Santos 100 XL offers a larger case, including in chronograph form. Trying them on is still the best way to choose the right size.
The Panthère is the jewellery watch par excellence, with its supple bracelet that wraps the wrist. The Tank, in its smaller sizes, is a timeless classic, and the medium Santos suits women who like a sportier watch. Diamond-set or two-tone versions add a dressier touch. The right choice depends mostly on the wrist and on the style you want.
A fake can look convincing in photos. An expert checks the movement, the serial and reference numbers on the caseback, the dial printing and secret signature, the blue cabochon on the crown, the finishing of the case and bracelet, and the original papers when available. Every Cartier we offer goes through that check before it goes on sale.
Well-maintained Cartier watches sold with box and papers generally keep a good share of their value on the secondary market, especially the Santos and the Panthère. Cartier remains less speculative than some sports watches from other brands, though, and future value is never guaranteed. Start by choosing a Cartier you love to wear every day.
What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
