Audemars Piguet, the manufacture behind the Royal Oak
Founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux, Audemars Piguet is one of the great names of haute horlogerie. In 1972, it unveiled the Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta: a steel sports watch priced above many gold watches, with an octagonal bezel held by eight hexagonal screws and a bracelet integrated into the case. The original reference, the 5402ST, created the luxury sports watch category, and the Royal Oak is still the heart of the brand today. Read the full story in our Royal Oak guide.
Which Audemars Piguet collection should you choose?
| Collection | What sets it apart | At Honos |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Oak (1972) | Octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet, Tapisserie dial | Royal Oak Chronograph, blue dial |
| Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar | Day, date, month, moon phase and leap year on a Royal Oak case | Blue dial, in our showcase |
| Royal Oak Offshore (1993) | Larger and sportier, often on a rubber strap | Offshore Diver “Japan Edition” |
| Code 11.59 (2019) | Round case, contemporary dress style | On request, through our network |
The best advice is still to try them on: with an integrated bracelet, the size and thickness of a Royal Oak change a lot on the wrist. To compare models, references and buying tips, see our Audemars Piguet buying guide.
What to look at on a Royal Oak
- The Tapisserie dial: the original Petite Tapisserie, or the Grande Tapisserie with larger squares on the 41 mm references.
- The size: the 39 mm extra-thin “Jumbo”, closest to the 1972 watch, or the more present 41 mm.
- The finishing: satin-brushed surfaces and polished bevels alternate on the case and bracelet, a hand finish that’s hard to copy.
- The complication: time and date, chronograph or perpetual calendar, each with its own character and price level.
Every Audemars Piguet authenticated by our experts
The Royal Oak is one of the most counterfeited watches in the world. Before it’s offered, every piece goes through our authenticity check: movement, serial and reference numbers, alignment of the bezel screws, Tapisserie dial, finishing of the case and bracelet, and original papers when available. Frequently asked questions about Audemars Piguet
An Audemars Piguet’s price depends mainly on the collection, the material, the complication and the condition of the piece. A steel Royal Oak with date is the most common entry point into the Royal Oak line; gold, chronographs and perpetual calendars cost considerably more. On the secondary market, box, papers and the rarity of the reference also weigh heavily. Our buying guide gives price benchmarks by model.
Audemars Piguet produces a limited number of watches each year, and demand for the Royal Oak, especially in steel, far exceeds supply in boutiques. Buyers often face long waits at authorized dealers. A broker can search the secondary market and a network of contacts to find a specific reference, with an authenticity check before the sale.
The Royal Oak is the 1972 original: thinner, more refined, usually on its integrated steel or gold bracelet. The Royal Oak Offshore, launched in 1993, is larger and sportier, with a more muscular case and often a rubber strap. The first slips more easily under a shirt cuff; the second has a much bolder presence on the wrist. Trying both is the best way to choose.
The Royal Oak is widely counterfeited, so a pre-owned Audemars Piguet should always be checked by an expert before you buy it. Points to verify include the movement, the serial and reference numbers, the alignment of the bezel screws, the Tapisserie dial, the case and bracelet finishing and the original papers. Every Audemars Piguet we offer goes through that check.
Yes. If the reference you want isn’t in our showcase, our brokerage service searches our network to locate it, whether it’s a Royal Oak Jumbo, a specific chronograph or an Offshore. Tell us the model, dial and material you’re after, and we’ll come back to you with the options available. Every piece is authenticated before the transaction.
Well-maintained Royal Oaks generally retain a good share of their value on the secondary market, especially steel references and pieces sold with box and papers. Values vary a lot by reference, material and market conditions, and some models are more volatile than others. Future value is never guaranteed: start by choosing an Audemars Piguet you love to wear.
What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
