What makes a true dive watch
A dive watch is built to time a dive and to stay readable under water. The ISO 6425 standard sets the essentials: water resistance of at least 100 m, a unidirectional rotating bezel to track elapsed time, luminous hands and markers readable in the dark, and a robust screw-down crown. Today’s luxury dive watches go well beyond that, and most are worn far more often at the office than at sea.
Which dive watch should you choose?
| Model | Case | Water resistance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner | 41 mm | 300 m | The benchmark everyday dive watch, with or without date |
| Rolex Deepsea | 44 mm | 3,900 m | Large wrists and extreme specifications |
| Tudor Black Bay 58 | 39 mm | 200 m | Vintage look, slim to medium wrists |
| Tudor Black Bay Pro | 39 mm | 200 m | A tool watch with a second time zone |
Diameter is only part of the story: case thickness and bracelet change the fit a lot. The best way to choose is to try several models back to back in store.
The icons of the category
- Rolex Submariner: introduced in 1953, it set the template for the modern dive watch. Today it measures 41 mm, is water-resistant to 300 m and has a Cerachrom ceramic bezel. Our Submariner buyer’s guide explains the references.
- Rolex Deepsea: the Sea-Dweller Deepsea, launched in 2008, is water-resistant to 3,900 m and has a helium escape valve. Its gradient D-Blue dial, nicknamed “James Cameron”, honours the filmmaker’s 2012 solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
- Tudor Black Bay: Rolex’s sister brand reinterprets its vintage divers, with the 39 mm Black Bay 58 and the Black Bay Pro and its GMT hand. See our Tudor buying guide.
- Omega Seamaster: a line born in 1948, made famous by the Diver 300M worn by James Bond since 1995. Read our Omega guide to the Speedmaster and Seamaster.
Every dive watch authenticated by our experts
The Submariner is one of the most counterfeited watches in the world. Before it’s offered, every piece goes through our authenticity check: movement, serial and reference numbers, bezel and dial finishing, bracelet and clasp, and original papers when available. Frequently asked questions about luxury dive watches
A dive watch is a watch designed to be worn under water and to time a dive. Under the ISO 6425 standard, it must be water-resistant to at least 100 m, have a unidirectional rotating bezel to measure elapsed time and luminous markings readable in the dark. The Rolex Submariner, Tudor Black Bay and Omega Seamaster Diver 300M are among the best-known examples.
The Rolex Submariner remains the benchmark: launched in 1953, it is water-resistant to 300 m and holds its value well on the secondary market. The Tudor Black Bay offers a similar spirit with a more vintage style, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M is a strong alternative, and the Rolex Deepsea suits those who want extreme specifications. The right choice depends on your wrist and your style.
For swimming and snorkelling, 100 m is enough. For recreational scuba diving, 200 to 300 m, like the Tudor Black Bay or Rolex Submariner, leaves a comfortable margin. Ratings of 1,000 m and more, like the Rolex Deepsea at 3,900 m, are mostly a matter of engineering and character: no recreational diver comes close to those depths.
Yes. Most luxury dive watches are worn every day, well away from the water. A Submariner or a Black Bay 58 on its steel bracelet works with jeans as well as with a suit, as long as the case slips under the shirt cuff. Larger models like the Deepsea are better suited to a casual look.
Water resistance depends on the gaskets, which age over time, not on the watch’s reputation. Before swimming or diving with a pre-owned dive watch, have its water resistance tested by a qualified watchmaker, especially if you don’t know when it was last serviced. Every watch we offer is first authenticated by our experts.
What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
