What is a GMT watch?
A GMT watch shows a second time zone with an extra hand that makes one turn of the dial every 24 hours, read against a 24-hour scale on the bezel or the dial. The name comes from Greenwich Mean Time, the reference time pilots and navigators used. The best-known example is the Rolex GMT-Master, introduced in 1955 for airline pilots on long-haul flights, followed in 1982 by the GMT-Master II, whose local hour hand can be set on its own. Other travel watches take a different route: a second time zone on a subdial, a day/night indicator, or the 24 time zones of a world time watch.
Which travel watch is right for you?
| Model | How it shows a second time zone | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rolex GMT-Master II | 24-hour hand and rotating 24-hour bezel: up to three time zones | Frequent flyers, the archetypal GMT |
| Rolex Sky-Dweller | Second time zone on an off-centre disc, plus an annual calendar | Business travellers who want a dressier watch |
| Rolex Explorer II | Orange 24-hour hand and fixed 24-hour bezel | Telling day from night, an adventure look |
| Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time | Second time zone with day/night indicator | Haute horlogerie in a luxury sport case |
| Breitling Navitimer GMT | 24-hour GMT hand on a pilot’s watch | Aviation enthusiasts |
| Grand Seiko GMT | 24-hour GMT hand | Fans of Japanese finishing |
All of these models can show your home time and your local time at a glance. The difference is in how they display it, and in the style: a sports tool watch, a dress watch or a pilot’s watch. To see other sporty shapes, browse our luxury sport watches, or all our men’s luxury watches.

Frequently asked questions about GMT watches
GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, the reference time once used worldwide by pilots and navigators. On a watch, it refers to a complication that shows a second time zone, usually with a hand that turns once every 24 hours and a 24-hour scale on the bezel or dial. You can read your home time and local time at the same moment.
The regular hour and minute hands show local time. The GMT hand, often in a different colour, points to the 24-hour scale and shows the second time zone, for example the time at home. On watches with a rotating 24-hour bezel, like the Rolex GMT-Master II, turning the bezel lets you follow a third time zone.
On a so-called true GMT, the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps without stopping the watch, which makes changing time zones easy when you land. The Rolex GMT-Master II and Explorer II work this way. On a caller GMT, it’s the 24-hour hand that is set on its own, which is handier for following a fixed second time zone from home.
The Rolex GMT-Master II is the reference for travellers who want a robust sports watch. The Sky-Dweller adds an annual calendar in a dressier style. The Explorer II suits those who want a fixed bezel and an adventure look. Outside Rolex, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time, the Breitling Navitimer GMT and the Grand Seiko GMT offer other styles. Trying them on in store is the best way to choose.
Yes. Most GMT watches are built as sturdy everyday sports watches. The Rolex GMT-Master II, Explorer II and Sky-Dweller are water-resistant to 100 metres in their Oyster case. The GMT function doesn’t get in the way when you’re not travelling: you can simply set the 24-hour hand to local time, or use it to tell day from night.

What our clients say
I bought my first Rolex Submariner from François and the experience was flawless. He took the time to compare the Submariner Date with the No Date, showed me the original papers and the box, and the price was fair against the market. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic luxury watch in Montreal.
What won me over was how transparent François is about authentication. He walked me through how he checks the movement and the serial number on my Tudor Black Bay. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about watchmaking.
I sold my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and François made me a clear offer in under 24 hours, well above what I was being offered elsewhere. No pressure, fast payment. If you want to sell a luxury watch with confidence, this is the place.
